How can you be accountable to yourself?

In my last post, I wrote about what it means to be accountable.

When we hear accountability, the first thing that comes to mind is being accountable to someone. That's very important, but I like to say that its important to be accountable to yourself first. Accountability to self will propel you to seek to be accountable to other people.

How can you accountable to yourself

When you take 100 percent responsibility for holding yourself accountable, your performance will improve, your relationships will flourish,   and your self esteem will grow.

Your life is your life. It's nobody else's life. You need to be responsible for it. You need to take charge of it. When you are held accountable, you will be able to achieve whatever you wish to achieve.

Being accountable to self simply means that you are ready to take responsibility for however your life turns out, not blaming any external factor for whatever happens to you. By being accountable to self, you are saying, no longer will life just happen to you. You are ready to be an active player in your own life.

What are those things to be accountable for? ( Details in another blog post):

1. How you spend your time
2. The words that you speak
3. Your thoughts
4. How you treat people
5. Your response to challenges
6. Your attitude
7. The energy that you give off to people
8. How you spend your resources
9. Your friendship and Your inner circle
10. The kind of person you marry
11. Where you choose to live
12. The kind of job that you do
13. Your goals

The list goes on and on .

How to be accountable to yourself

1. Have a clear goal and a clear plan about what you want in your life, and write them down.

Don't just keep them in your mind. Being deliberate and intentional starts with writing down.

What do you want out of your relationships? Your walk with God? Your career? Your academics? etc.

You need to be clear about what you want with every category of your life. Micheal Hyatt wrote a lot about creating a life plan and you can check one of his article here. Ensure that you download the life plan document at the end of the article.

Asides having a clear life plan, you should regular set goals and make plans to achieve your goals.

"The most successful people I know don’t end up there by mistake. While from the outside it can sometimes seem like luck or that it “happened overnight”, I believe that the key to their success is having a clear set of written goals that outline and provide action steps toward their dreams." MICHEAL HYATT

Here's another article on how to set goals that you can actually achieve.

2. Have a daily to do list. If possible, have a daily not-to-do list.

How can you accountable to yourself

Don't start any day without a plan. It's best to plan for the next day the night before.

3. Have a time of personal review/retreat

How can you accountable to yourself

Plan a day in the month or in the week, depending on what works for you, when you retreat, and think of how the month has been, or how the week has been. Never make the mistake of going months after months without a review. Once a month can be good, once a week is also not bad. That is a time to meet with yourself and to connect with God. It's also a time to review your goals, make amendments and adjustments, especially in cases where you have not been consistent with your plans.

In my next article, I will write about being accountable to other people.
