How to develop a personal relationship with Jesus

How to develop a personal relationship with Jesus

A personal relationship with Jesus ought to be every individual’s ultimate goal and desire, because we were created by Him and for His glory. Notably, a personal relationship with Jesus flows from an in depth understanding of the precious sacrifice that Jesus Christ paid for us to be accepted in the beloved. Subsequently, this deep understanding and realization then causes us to respond in no other way, but to wholly live for Him who has loved us with an everlasting love and has drawn us to Himself with His loving kindness.

How to develop a personal relationship with Jesus

O  my  soul, you have said to the Lord , “You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing apart from You.”

Psalms 16:2

Whom have I in heaven but  You? And there  is none upon earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalms 73:25‭-‬26

These 2 passages from Psalms reveal such a great depth of what it means to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The psalmists (David and Asaph) had both come to the realization that God was their greatest and most precious treasure to ever have on this earth.

How to develop a personal relationship with Jesus

To develop a personal (key word is Personal) relationship with Jesus Christ means that we have to come to the full realization He's all we ever need, He's our constant, our Rock. Now, having said that I need also to mention that a personal relationship with Jesus is our responsibility.

What do I mean?

* Your parents can't have this relationship on your behalf,

* Your spouse can't have this relationship on your behalf,

* Your child(ren) or best friend can't have this relationship on your behalf,

* Not even your pastor, or mentor can have this relationship on your behalf

Each one of us has a personal responsibility to deliberately and willingly respond to Jesus Christ Who has already loved us eternally to have that relationship with Him. You must be consumed daily by the desire to fellowship with Him by taking time to:

1. Talk to Him

2. Listen to Him

3. Learn and know His heart.

Let's take some time and reflect.... How has your personal relationship with Jesus Christ been? Have you been taking it casually? Do you even have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?

Let’s look at 3 distinct areas on how to develop and grow a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

1. By reading and studying the Word of God

Jesus is the living word of God.

Consider John 1:14 and Heb. 4:12.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 1:14

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

What a glorious truth the word of God became flesh and dwelt among men. Jesus Christ the living word of God wants us to have a personal relationship with Him. And in a world that is all harsh and deceptive, He reveals Himself to us with grace and truth. Moreover, it is by reading God's word that our intents are made known and by His word He cleanses our consciences aligning us to His truth and will.

John 6:63 also reminds us that the words that Jesus Christ speaks to us are spirit and they are truth. Hence reading the word will refresh our spirits and counsel us in His truth.

2. Prayer

This is the second way we develop and grow a personal relationship with Jesus Christ

Scripture references:

*Psalm 68:19

*Phil. 4:6

*Heb. 4:16

*1 Jn. 5:14,15

It delights the heart of Jesus when we go to Him in prayer concerning every request. Our relationship with Him is built up as we see Him respond to those requests with grace and perfect answers. What a great High Priest we have in our Lord Jesus Christ.

3. Meditation

Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Phillipians 4:6

This kind of meditation we're talking about is different from the one that is being practiced in the world today. Godly meditation does not involve emptying one’s mind, no! Rather, godly meditation is thinking about God's word. It's also the application of God's word in our lives to give us direction.

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Psalms 119:105

It is focusing our hearts on God and shutting everything else. It enlarges our view of God as pray, read and meditate on God's word.

In conclusion, meditation means that I and Jesus Christ have a relationship more intimate than even a relationship between husband and wife.

We cannot afford not to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ!!!!

God bless you immensely.
